Work Permit Information

What is a work permit?
A work permit is a legal document required by the state that allows a person under the age of 18 or still in high school to hold a job. The purpose of a work permit is to protect the student from illegal working conditions and keep the student in school.

How do I get a work permit?
You must have a job or a job offer to get a work permit. Students are welcome to drop into the Counseling Office about obtaining a work permit.

At what age can I get a work permit?
In most cases, students must be at least 14 years old.

How often do I need to get a work permit?
Each time you are hired for a new job, a new work permit is necessary. All work permits expire shortly after school starts in September, even if you have the same job.

How many hours may I work?

Age 14 or 15

3 hours per day
18 hours weekly maximum
No later than 7:00pm

School not in session
8 hours per day
40 hours weekly maximum
No later than 9:00pm

Age 16 or 17
School in session
4 hours per day
28 hours weekly maximum
No later than 10:00pm

School not in session
8 hours per day
48 hours weekly maximum
No later than 12:30

**The school is allowed to limit the total hours to 20 if it is considered to be in the best interest of the student.
