Congratulations, Academic Decathlon!

The Woodbridge High Academic Decathlon team placed 1st overall out of over 40 high schools in the 50th annual Orange County Academic Decathlon, repeating as Orange County Champions for the first time in the history of our team!

Rather than the usual 9 students, this year’s team consisted of only 7 students, and they competed in a series of 10 academic events, ranging from mathematics and social science to speech and interview on this year’s competition theme of Africa.

The team has been working hard since last May, meeting after school, on weekends, through Summer and Winter Breaks. Repeating as county championship is an incredible testament to the dedication, sacrifice, and maturity of this great group of kids.

We believe they represented themselves and the school with pride and have taken our legacy of OCAD success to new heights!

This year our team members are:

  • Juniors: Captain Hannah Hui, Sachin Pathuri, Matthew Ho, Connie Pak, JP Faza, Sugnan Suresh
  • Senior: Daniel Kang

All of our team members performed exceptionally well, achieved personal and team goals, and won numerous individual medals for the various events (too many to list!).

Additionally, our team placed 4th in the county in the important Super Quiz team event.

Of special note, all of our team members were at the top of the entire competition for their overall performances and received numerous individual accolades and generous financial scholarships:

Sugnan placed 4th overall in the entire country for his GPA division

Daniel placed 2nd overall in the entire county for his GPA division

Connie placed 6th overall in the entire county for her GPA division

JP placed 4th overall in the entire county for his GPA division

Matthew earned the 5th highest score in the entire competition

Sachin earned the 3rd highest score in the entire competition as a sophomore

And Hannah had the highest score in the entire county and competition!

As County Champions, Woodbridge has been invited to represent Orange County at the State Competition in Sacramento for the seventh consecutive year, along with these 4 other OC Schools: Westminster, Trabuco Hills, Valencia, University

Heading into the California Academic Decathlon State Competition in March, we will likely be one of the Top 15 teams in the California, placing us in the Top 20 of the entire nation.

We have high goals and expectations for the state competition, and the students are looking forward to improving upon their county scores.

If you see these students, please congratulate them for their incredible hard work and dedication and wish them luck as they compete at the state level in late March!
