Athletics Course Offerings

Cheer

Learn more about Cheer at WHS

Term: Yearlong  |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required (May)

Competitive: Competitive opportunities exist during the winter season at the Varsity and JV levels. Competitions are 1/2 day events and are performance-based. Emphasis is put on stunting, dance, and crowd-leading.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday competitions

Sideline: This includes leading the crowd, which includes Varsity at Football and Basketball games during their respective fall and winter seasons.

Time Commitment: 2 hour practices 3 days a week + games 


CROSS COUNTRY (Boys and Girls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  No Tryout Required

In-Season Q1: Cross Country is a Fall sport, open to all athletes.  The competitions are all invitational. Invitationals begin in August and happen sporadically throughout the season until the first week of November.  All athletes are expected to compete at all events, as long as they meet the basic requirements. 

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday Invitationals

Off-Season Q2, Q3, & Q4: During this time, athletes will work on run technique, strength training and endurance.


Football

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  No Tryout Required

In-Season Q1: Competitive opportunities are offered with Freshmen, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams (numbers permitting). Athletes will be trained in the proper fundamentals of receiving, passing, running, blocking and tackling.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday film study (Varsity) + practice on holidays (Labor Day, Veterans Day)

Off-Season Q2, Q3, & Q4: During this time, athletes will work on weight training and agility to strengthen their skills. 


Golf (Boys and Girls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required

In-Season: Golf is offered on the Varsity level only. Players will compete in tournaments as well as dual single matches.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily

Off-Season: We recommend athletes participate in more than one sport. This class covers strength training and some stroke work.


Tennis (Boys and Girls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required

In-Season: Competitive opportunities are offered at the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. The student athletes will have the opportunity to compete in individual and team tournament play as well as dual match competition.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily

Off-Season: We recommend our athletes participate in more than one sport. Course will cover tennis strategies, strength training and conditioning. 


Volleyball (Boys and Girls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required

In-Season: Competitive opportunities are offered on the Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Athletes will be given the opportunity to compete in pool play tournaments as well as single game matches.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily  + Saturday tournaments

Off-Season:
We recommend our athletes participate in more than one sport. The course concentrates on strength training, plyometrics and conditioning.


Water Polo (Boys and Girls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required

In-Season: Athletes will have the opportunity to compete on the Frosh/Soph and Varsity levels. Players may be able to compete at the Novice or Junior Varsity levels if the number of players warrants that level. Athletes will compete in both tournament and single game competition. Training may include more than one practice per day

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday tournaments.

Off-Season: We encourage our athletes to participate in more than one sport. Off season will work on conditioning and stroke work. We highly recommend joining the swim team. 


Basketball (Boys and Girls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required

In-Season Q3: Competitive opportunities are offered for Boys teams at the Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels, and the Girls teams at the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in tournaments and single games. Team play in all situations will be stressed on both offense and defense.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + some Saturday + Winter Break Play.

Off-Season Q1, Q2, & Q4: This time includes training in basketball strategies, strength and conditioning.


Soccer (Boys and Girls)

In-Season: Competitive opportunities are offered on the Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in tournaments and single games. Fundamentals and team play will be stressed on both offense and defense.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily

Off-Season: We recommend all athletes participate in more than one sport. This course will cover strategies, strength and conditioning skills.


Wrestling (Boys and Girls)

In-Season: Competitive opportunities are offered on the Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Athletes may compete in individual and team tournaments as well as dual meet matches. Due to the high degree of training and weight control required for this sport, athletes will be required to follow strict training methods. 

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday invitationals.

Off-Season: We recommend our athletes to participate in more than one sport.
The course will work on techniques, weight training and conditioning conducive to the sport.


Baseball

In-Season Q4: Competitive opportunities are offered for Boys teams at the Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in tournaments and single games. Team-play in all situations will be stressed on both offense and defense. Tryouts will occur in mid-July and then again early December.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily

Off-Season Q1, Q2, & Q3: We encourage all athletes to participate in other sports. This class is by permission only and will concentrate on strength and conditioning as well as baseball skills. 


Lacrosse (Boys and GIrls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required

In-Season: Competitive opportunities are offered for both Boys and Girls teams on the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in tournaments and single games. Fundamentals and team play will be stressed on both offense and defense.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday competitions.

Off-Season: We recommend our athletes participate in more than one sport. This course will consist of strength and conditioning workouts as well as stick work.


Softball

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Tryout Required

In-Season: Competitive opportunities are offered on the Junior Varsity (numbers permitting) and Varsity levels. Opportunities will be given to athletes to compete in a team atmosphere. Some tournament play as well as single game competition.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday competitions.

Off-Season: We encourage our athletes to play more than one sport. This course will work on softball skills and conditioning. 


Swimming (Boys and Girls)

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   |  Swim Competency Required

In-Season Q4: Competition is offered on the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Athletes will compete in relay and dual meets. A great deal of training will be required for successful competition which may include more than one practice per day. 

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily +  practice 3-4 hours per week.

Off-Season Q1, Q2, & Q3: The course will consist of stroke development, strength and conditioning. 


Track and field

Term: Quarter |   Level: High School Graduation Credit   | No Tryout Required

In-Season: Competitive opportunities are offered for both Boys and Girls teams on the Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in invitational in both individual and team events as well as compete in team dual meets. There are no limits placed on the number of athletes who may compete and all are welcome to try out.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours daily + Saturday invitationals.

Off-Season: The course will consist of strength training, conditioning, and overall fitness training.
